So, you can stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint and be astounded by how beautiful its features are. Then, continue your journey to Narok, where you will stop by a supermarket for snacks and refreshments before going off to the unpaved, bumpy road towards the Musiara gate. Hence, the distance covered from Nairobi to Masai Mara is about 250 km, and thats about 7 hours on the road trip, depending on the number of stops made on the road.

From Musiara Gate, it is about 25 minutes drive to Governors’ Camp, where you’ll stay. As you arrive, be welcomed in by a warm, fresh towel to help clean the dust and a cold organic drink and then be shown to your tent. After freshening up, take a walk just around the Governors’ Camp, and you might see elephants roaming around or even warthogs as your dinner is being set up on the deck overlooking the Mara River. Lastly, dinner is in the form of a candlelight dinner accompanied by your favorite wine. Later, go for a rest as you prepare for a full day walking safari in Masai Mara.

Day 2: Full-Day Masai Mara Walking Safari Experience

Even if it is a full-day walking safari experience in this national park in Kenya, it is divided in bits. So, the first Masai Mara walking expedition is around the Mara riverine forests as early as 6:00 AM. Therefore, wake up to catch the wilderness as it comes to life. As you take a walk, view radiant beams of sunlight make their way through the trees, warming up the colobus monkeys and olive baboons that are socializing in the trees. Also, observe flocks of bird species like the crowned hornbills leave their nests to go hunt for food. This early morning walking expedition in Masai Mara takes about 2 hours.

Then by 8:30 AM, return to the governor’s camp for a morning meal prepared on the open lawn in the form of a buffet. By 11:00, you will have rested and then, after a brief break, have a guided walk from Governors Camp in Masai Mara to the Rianda Maasai community homesteads. So, this takes a 2-hour walk to reach the manyattas. Along your way, you might encounter the impalas, giraffes, and floral species like the wild sage, wild basil, whistling thorn acacia, and magic guarri. So, upon arrival, you are welcomed by Maasai entertainers dancing the Adumu.

Then you will be invited inside one of the manyattas during this 3 day Masai Mara walking expedition. So, learn how these buildings were built and the historical contexts of the Maasai culture. Later, have a packed lunch before walking back to the Governor’s camp. As you reach the camp, you will be just in time for the barbecue dinner; freshen up and enjoy the meal with stories being narrated to you by a Maasai guide, and you can ask anything.

Day 3: Final Walking Safari in Masai Mara and Return to Nairobi

Breakfast is to be brought to your tent by 8:30 AM, and you will have rested enough. Later, have a guided walk along the riverbanks of Musiara, and on the ground, you might find footprints of a cheetah that might have been in that area for the night hunt. Also, watch the vervet monkeys as they move from tree to tree, and you will observe trees like the African ebony, the sausage tree and taje in the scent of the wild sisal.

Lastly, walk back towards the Governor’s Camp and after lunch, say farewell and drive back to the Wilson International Airport in Nairobi. Hence, your 3 day Masai Mara walking safari ends here.

Best Time for an Authentic 3 day Masai Mara Walking Safari

The best time to visit Masai Mara for a walking tour is from July to October, for 3 days. So, one doesn’t have to stress much tracking down the animals on foot since it’s a dry season. Additionally, most of the animals are usually congregated at the waterholes; hence, it is easy to find them. Also, the wildebeests, during the less crowded dry season, from January to February, are also ideal for this 3 day walking tour in Masai Mara as the ground is dry and easily passable.
