Day 1: Self drive from Nairobi to the Masai Mara – A Luxury Wilderness Arrival in a Land Cruiser

Therefore, enjoy your breakfast in the morning here as you wait on your luxury 4×4 Land Cruiser to be delivered to you. Inspect it and confirm if it has all the specifications agreed upon. Also, check if there’s a spare tire, toolbox and test if the 2H to 4L system is working well. After preparing, you drive to the A104 highway via the Southern bypass, passing the Great Rift Valley Escarpment and the emerald green carpet of the valley floor.

Then, continue to the B3 highway, encountering some traffic congestion.  Stop at Narok for a delicious meal at Artcaffe. After the meal, drive via the tarmac road that transitions to gravel, then stop at Sekenani gate, where your Masai Mara permit is verified, and this self-drive trip from Nairobi to Masai Mara takes about 6-8 hours from Nairobi including stopovers. While driving to the JW Marriott hotel, you will see olive baboons jumping, impalas passing by, and zebras grazing.

Day 2: Full-Day Luxury Self Drive in the Masai Mara

Wake up by 5:30 AM and then take a drive in your Land Cruiser following the sunrise into the center of the Masai Mara. So, go ahead and explore the Rhino Ridge but the terrain here is steep; hence, you shift to the 4th gear of your Land Cruiser going up the climb. Upon arrival, observe the rhinos scattered and coming out for the morning graze as well as other animals. Later, meet up with your chef and other staff under the umbrella tree where a bush breakfast is prepared for you. So, enjoy the warm buffet as you interact with the staff of the JW Marriott hotel and learn about the Masai Mara and which places are ideal for wildlife viewing and self-drive.

In the middle of the day, embark on a game drive still in the heart of the Masai Mara to see lions warming up for their hunt as they stalk an eland roaming freely on the plains. Also, watch a black-bearded jackal hunting and so more. Later, have another picnic set up in the same area where you had the bush breakfast, with a side of fruit, in the late afternoon. When you go for another self-drive, this time track the cheetahs lying on the grasslands as the elephants move in groups. Head back for dinner at the JE Marriott hotel by 6: 00 PM, and then you go back to your beautiful suite for rest.

Day 3: Self drive to the Mara River and Enjoy the Great Migration Experience

Drive towards the Mara River by 5:30 PM in the morning. As you become acquainted with the area you will be exploring throughout the day, some of the tracks are narrow, so you will need to fold the mirrors of the Land Cruiser vehicle when passing through such an area. In the morning, you might see a leopard perched on top of the umbrella tree and vervet monkeys on trees. Later, return to the lodge after the morning game drive for breakfast at the restaurant. Drive your Land Cruiser at the River’s edge and wait for the arrival of the Migration herd.

Initially, observe that these wildebeests stop at the cliff point because they know the Nile crocodiles are waiting for them in the waters. Additionally, see one or two of the animals try to cross and when they make it to the other side, the others follow, but this is where the drama begins as they still have the fear to cross these muddy waters. Enjoy watching these wildebeests move chaotically, but the unlucky one is captured and devoured into pieces while the others now run in terror; it is an overwhelming sight, but it’s still interesting. Lastly, go back to the JW Marriott lodge for lunch, and have a massage treatment in the evening as you await the candlelit bush dinner.

Day 4: Hot Air Balloon Safari Experience and Musiara Marsh visit

At 4:30 PM, drive to the Governor’s Camp to launch hot air balloons in Masai Mara. Your captain will inflate the balloon with a team of 6-7, and provide a safety briefing. As you ascend, the air becomes crisp and the noise decreases, creating a sense of calm. Below you, you’ll see the sun-kissed horizon and wildebeests moving through the dust. Also, spot other animals in Masai Mara National Reserve like herbivores including zebras, rhinos and buffaloes grazing and big cats like lions and leopards resting, then descend to the ground after an hour. Enjoy a private bush breakfast prepared for you alongside a bottle of champagne upon arrival on the ground.

Rest enough and then drive through the black cotton soils to the Musiara swamp area known for having a high concentration of the big cats. So, prepare to enjoy the big chase where lions hunt down the vulnerable animals like the impalas and the scenery here is great for pictures. Just to save time, enyoy a packed lunch at leisure and continue exploring this area. Also, spot the Kirk’s dik-dik running through the thickets, alongside the bushbuck. In the late afternoon, have a sundowner, enjoy a meal as you look at the sunset and then drive back to the JW Marriott lodge for rest.

Day 5: Southern Masai Mara safari exploration and a self drive trip to Nairobi

Driving near the Masai Mara’s southern boundary before dawn, you come across a group of elands navigating the grasslands’ undulating slopes. Additionally, elephants are roaming as usual, with their calves following them, while falcons are traveling in groups while hunting. Lastly, drive back to Narok before continuing to Nairobi. This time, stop at Wilson International Airport to hand over the Land Cruiser before leaving for your flight back home.
